Koalas are arboreal marsupial herbivores native only to
Australia; this means they live in trees (arboreal), like Kangaroos they
have pouches in which they carry their young (marsupial), and that they
only eat plants (herbivore). They have a bear-like appearance but are
actually not related to bears at all; it is a common mistake to call them
"Koala Bears". Their closest (but still very distant) relatives are
wombats, who are also marsupials, but are burrowing animals. Koalas can be
found mostly on the east coast of Australia, from tropical north
Queensland all the way south to Victoria, and even as far west as
Adelaide. Koalas survive almost solely on eucalypt leaves (which is why
they live in eucalyptus trees) from which they obtain 90% of their
hydration. In fact, this is where the name "Koala" comes from; it
literally means "no drink" in Australian Aboriginal language.
